The research conducted by Finelite and the California Energy Commission, through its Public Interest Energy Research (PIER) program, continues to receive recognition by the lighting industry.
In the latter part of 2005 the IES Progress Committee recognized the PIER 4.5 study, and the products created during the study (ICLS & Series X2), as a "Unique and Significant Advancement to the art and science of lighting."
Most recently the study results were published in the February 2006 issue of LD+A. In his Energy Advisor column, Willard L. Warren describes the research objectives and then thoroughly reviews the top 10 recommendations developed through the research. This well-written, unbiased view of the research is summarized as follows:
"The beauty of the PIER 4.5 recommendations is that they lead to lighting solutions that address the teaching requirements that we expect to see in use over the next 15 to 25 years. They are affordable and provide the soft, comfortable lighting that teachers prefer.
Finally, school districts save on energy cost since lighting power density is cut to 0.8 watt per sq ft or less, depending on the size of the classroom and the optional controls chose.
That's the only way I know to have your cake and eat it too."
